Our Story

Majou was destined to be a veritable hive of people, eating, drinking, cooking, celebrating; the possibilities are truly endless. From the moment I began to envision the property in its newest life, I realized that while I might never stand in front of a restaurant again, I would most definitely open the doors at Majou to those who are looking to engage all of the five senses; those who seek a deeply relaxing yet enthralling locale in which to study, learn or hone a skill, while luxuriating the splendor of all four seasons. Conversely, Majou is the perfect spot for a dynamic photo shoot, and the most gorgeous setting imaginable for a party or very special event.

Our Story

This chapter begins as most stories do: with a quest.
And a heroine.

Restaurateur, writer, and lowkey bon vivant Alison Price Becker spotted a historic house in need of love. After a tumultuous start in 2020, Domaine Majou has come back to life. From each hand-selected tile down to the cistern that waters the entire property, Alison’s vision for a place to create, come together, and celebrate is finally here.

But it wasn’t an easy journey.

2019 A SERENDIPITOUS DISCOVERY

In the rolling countryside of Aude, where vineyards meet ancient villages, Alison found herself standing before a sleeping beauty—Domaine Majou. Weathered by time and neglect, the estate still whispered stories of gatherings and laughter that once filled its rooms. For Alison, it wasn’t just a property; it was a canvas waiting to be restored.

“Would I be naked alone in the countryside, in a foreign country? Yet none of that mattered. I had my project, my lifeline, my ultimate escape. As fiercely as waves of fear pulled me in and out with the tides, I found I was swimming strong and straight along the coastline, exiting the rip tide onto firmground…Domaine Majou, its meaning whirling dervishes, I was dancing, marching with them into the wee hours and into the future.”

2020 THE CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

Armed with vision and determination, but facing a global pandemic, Alison embarked on what would become both her greatest challenge and her most rewarding adventure. The estate revealed its secrets slowly: centuries-old stonework, hidden architectural treasures, and the remnants of gardens once lovingly tended.

“Baron?” I said, “non je ne suis pas un homme”.

“Alison, oui, tu es las Baronne” with a gesture of his arm and a slight bow.

“No, je suis La Baroness”

To which he laughed and corrected my French once more.

2021 RESPECTING HISTORY, CREATING FUTURE

Each decision in the renovation process balanced preservation with reinvention. Original beams were carefully restored. Local artisans brought traditional techniques to new installations. The cistern, a marvel of historic engineering, was painstakingly rehabilitated to once again nourish the grounds.

2022 THE SOUL OF THE HOUSE REAWAKENS

As walls were repaired and floors relaid, something magical began to happen. Domaine Majou started to breathe again. Rooms that had stood empty for decades began to hold possibility. The kitchen, designed by someone who understands the heart of hospitality, became a gathering place once more.

With a smile and a glance at a burning sun setting over the vineyard, I listen… the sounds of crickets replace the bumble bees, I can no longer see the lavender through the darkness, but I can smell its presence and the possibilities its scent implies.

2023 A VISION REALIZED

Today’s Domaine Majou stands as testament to patience, vision, and respect for history. What began as a personal quest has evolved into a sanctuary for creativity and connection. Every corner tells a story—of what was, what is, and what can be when we honor the past while embracing the future.

2024 Almost There

My plan was to open in 2024, but 2024 was the year of ideas. Every time I saw my contractor, I suddenly had another idea. I’m no longer allowed to have any more ideas– it’s time to open our doors.

2025 Let's Take It From the Top

The year of the dress rehearsal. 2025 brought our first big fête, our first retreat (who immediately booked for 2026), and many birthday and family gatherings.
